Choose Pena Palace if ornate architecture and royal interiors matter more than relaxed exploration. It also wins if this may be your only visit to Portugal and you would genuinely regret missing its most recognisable palace.

For most time-pressed visitors, Regaleira provides the richer and less rigid half-day. Pena is spectacular, but it demands tighter timing, more transport and greater patience. Pick the experience you actually enjoy, not simply the building that appears most often on postcards.
